    6 Technologies I’ll be Exploring in 2010

Webrat/Selenium, Cucumber - These should help me take testing up a notch in abstraction. I’m much more interested in black box, end user, acceptance testing. White box testing can be too brittle and breakable for many parts of applications.

NoSQL - As an OODBMS guy from way back in the day (mid to late nineties), I’ve always had a bit of skepticism about the “universal fit” theory of the RDBMS.

Inbound Marketing - An important set of skills and knowledge to round out my end to end digital entrepreneur skill set. I have to figure out how to not look on it all as vaguely dirty and unethical.

HTML 5 - HTML is one quarter of my base Web development toolkit (Rails, JavaScript and CSS being the other quarters). It’s been a long time since HTML4 so a lot of these improvements are probably long overdue.

Web Sockets - I write lots of web applications that act like desktop applications, needing periodic data updates without user intervention. Web sockets are an intriguing replacement for periodic AJAX refresh intervals.

Rails 3 - It’s coming. I’ll be moving to it earlier than most.
